Faith in New Jersey
To reduce racial and economic disparities within the state’s low-income communities through grassroots leadership development and organizing for public policy change.
PICO New Jersey is a statewide network of faith leaders and congregations working to reduce racial and economic disparities within the state’s low-income communities through grassroots leadership development and organizing for public policy change. Working with faith leaders and other community stakeholders across South, Central and North Jersey, PICO NJ is organizing to address gun-violence, health disparities, and immigrant rights. PICO NJ is an affiliate of People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO), a national network of faith-based community organizations working in 18 states.
PICO continues to work through organizing and advocacy to secure comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) at the federal level that would move an estimated 650,000 NJ residents out of the shadows; change draconian detention and deportation policies; implement the 2013 in-state tuition law; renew the effort to make New Jersey one of the few states in the nation to offer state financial aid to undocumented college students; launch a potential statewide campaign to establish a new driver’s license policy that would allow all state residents to apply for a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status; and lay the groundwork for a New Jersey version of California’s TRUST Act, which limits who state and local police can detain for possible deportation.
PICO-NJ is a strong and effective grassroots organization working tirelessly to achieve comprehensive immigration reform at the national level and fair and human immigration policies in New Jersey.
