Live Give Love South Jersey — The Baiada Way

livegivelove

On Thursday evening, October 27th at 6:30 PM, The Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) will honor J. Mark and Ann Claffey Baiada – two of South Jersey’s most gracious philanthropists – with the 4th Annual Legacy of Giving Award. They will follow in the footsteps of previous winners whose passion and commitment to making our region a better place is not only noteworthy, but exemplary.

The evening will begin at 6:30 pm with a reception in the lovely Garden Room of the historic Moorestown Community House at 16 E. Main Street, followed by a delicious fall harvest themed dinner in the Ballroom with local wines and beer from South Jersey. About 150 people are expected to attend. Tickets are available until October 24th to join the festivities that have attracted many community, civic and corporate leaders of the region. The evening will also include students from LUCY Outreach who will share how support from the Baiadas helped the organization achieve a 100% high school graduation rate and a 97% college admission rate in a city where the drop out rate is 48%.

It’s about LOVE.

Mark and Ann Claffey Baiada are passionate about many causes, and in their daily lives they seek out ways to make an impact that will outlive them. Ann has a reputation for being hands-on when it comes to the long list of organizations with which she is involved. Mark also gives his time and has been honored by numerous organizations and schools throughout our region. He also ensures that BAYADA Home Health Care employees have ample opportunity to work directly with community organizations they care about. Both Mark and Ann encourage their children and other family members to follow their passion and get involved. They set an awesome example by getting personally involved, often rolling up their sleeves to humbly participate in events, or leading the charge to raise money.

Offering amazing ways to LIVE.

Started more than 30 years ago, The BAYADA Regatta – an adaptive rowing competition held on the Schuylkill River to support those with physical disabilities – has grown steadily, becoming one of the largest all-adaptive rowing events in the world. The event helps people with a number of physical disabilities, including blindness, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, paraplegia or quadriplegia, while bringing spectators from around the world to the region.

And a legacy to GIVE.

This summer, Mark Baiada announced he will gift the BAYADA Home Health Care to a newly created foundation that will perpetuate the company and prevent it from being sold. Mark’s passion for the company’s mission drove the creation of the Lasting Legacy Plan.

“Mark and Ann’s actions prove they believe strongly in creating a lasting legacy of helping others.” said Sidney Hargro, CFSJ Executive Director, who worked with the Baiadas to create a family fund at CFSJ through which they can support their favorite organizations in perpetuity. “They are enormously inspiring and examples to all who want to maximize the impact that their giving has on our region.”

Live. Love. Give. South Jersey.  That is what The Community Foundation of South Jersey is all about. We help charitable-minded people make prudent decisions about the money they donate. CFSJ serves the eight-county South Jersey region – spanning from Ocean to Cape May Counties – managing donor-advised funds for individuals, families, businesses and communities. Currently, CFSJ manages the assets of more than $18.2 million in donor-advised funds. Since 2009, the organization has partnered with its fund holders to issue $6 million in grants and scholarships. Since 2013, Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) has celebrated our region’s exceptionally generous individuals and families with the Legacy of Giving Award. Each of the honorees has used their passion, knowledge and network to help others overcome struggles. Their legacies are about more than donating money. They selflessly give their time, talent and resources, maximizing the impact they have on the lives of people in South Jersey and beyond.

Our first recipient in 2013, Rob Kugler, an attorney for Archer & Greiner and one of the founding Board members for CFSJ was key to launching the organization. Rob quietly, yet persistently lead CFSJ through the legalities of starting a new non-profit long before any staff was hired. As a volunteer, Rob led negotiations and fine-tuned our affiliate agreement with Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ). He also represented South Jersey on CFNJ’s Investment Committee.

Rob is a long-time Board Chair for Symphony In C, having served on their Board for more than 26 years. In addition, Mr. Kugler’s extensive involvement in charitable, civic and professional organizations includes more than 40 years of dedicated service to the American Cancer Society (ACS). He currently serves on the National Board of Directors and as Secretary of the ACS, the world’s largest volunteer health organization.

In 2014, CFSJ honored two extraordinary South Jersey families. The Holmans, owners of the Holman Automotive Group and the Healey Family who own Viking Yachts based in New Gretna.

In addition to a decades-long of history donating time, money and cars to local non-profit organizations, the Holman family’s relationship with United Way of Camden County dates back to Steward Holman, one of the founders of Rice & Holman, and a founding Board member of the Community Chest of Camden — now part of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey (UWGPSJ).

Mindy Holman, president and CEO of Holman Automotive is a UWGPSJ Board member and was instrumental in the merger that created the new regional United Way. Through business or personal donations, the Holmans have contributed well over a million dollars to more than 375 different South Jersey organizations. Mindy is the current Board President of CFSJ.

Robert Healey, co-owner of Viking Yachts and his daughter Christine Healey were also honored in 2014. They have combined forces to support and reshape Catholic education in Camden and throughout the region. Robert Healy has been recognized for his commitment to Catholic education and the impact it has throughout one’s life. Christine Healey is also nationally recognized for her leadership in improving Catholic education in underprivileged communities.

The Healey family gives back through the Healey Education Foundation, Children’s Resource Center, Gleneayre Equestrian Program and the Healey International Relief Foundation. Christine serves as president of the Healey Education Foundation investing in the sustainability and growth of Catholic schools. Under Christine’s leadership, the foundation has expanded to serve nearly 60 elementary and high schools across four dioceses in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In 2013, Robert Healey was presented with St. Joseph’s University’s Shield of Loyola – a prestigious honor given to those who’s lives reflect the values of St. Ignatius Loyola. Robert Healey is a recognized leader who has made it his life’s work to help communities preserve and enhance Catholic education.

Christine co-founded and chairs the board of the Catholic Partnership Schools, a dynamic model of Catholic urban education designed to strengthen and sustain the five Catholic schools in Camden.

In 2015, Lewis Katz & Marcy Dalsey were selected to receive Legacy of Giving awards posthumously.

Lewis Katz was the founder and director of the Katz Foundation, which throughout his lifetime supported a wide variety of charitable, educational and medical causes. A native of Camden, his business accomplishments and philanthropy touched countless men, women and children in South Jersey and beyond. Two Boys & Girls Clubs in Camden, the Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill, as well as Temple and Columbia Universities were among the organizations that benefited from his extraordinary generosity. In 2011, he founded the recently-renamed Katz Dalsey Academy Charter School, part of Camden’s Charter School Network, which now serves children from Camden’s Parkside and Cramer Hill communities.

Marcy Dalsey co-founded the Katz Dalsey Academy Charter School (formerly known as the Katz Academy Charter School). She had worked with Katz family organizations in various capacities since 2007, including as executive director of the Drew A. Katz Foundation. Born in Camden, but raised in Pennsauken, her 35-year passion and commitment to serving others could only be trumped by her love for her four children, Chelsea, Robert, Grace and John Dalsey. Early in her career, she fed her passion for service by working with organizations like Food Bank of South Jersey, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley, Cooper Hospital, Covenant House, The Michael Bolton Foundation, The Chris Evert Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Camden County.

Both Katz and Dalsey perished suddenly in a plane crash in 2014 as they were heading home from a political fundraiser in New England.

Mark and Ann Baiada, this year’s Legacy of Giving honorees, share this honor with others who lived in, loved and gave in South Jersey. We will celebrate their generosity and impact of two more gracious philanthropists on October 27th at the Community House in Moorestown.

Each year, as part of the Community Foundation Legacy of Giving Event, we present a portion of the event proceeds to a South Jersey organization.  This year, the $2500 grant will be presented to LUCY (Lifting Up Camden’s Youth) Outreach.

LUCY offers multi-lingual, culturally sensitive services to low-income teens and young adults ages 12-25, and their families. LUCY was established to address the particular challenges and setbacks including teen delinquency, gang and drug recruitment, substance abuse in the home, teen pregnancy and a struggling public school system; all challenges of growing up in America’s poorest and most dangerous city. LUCY seeks to enhance their quality of life by filling the void with positive programming, by encouraging community involvement, and by providing services, resources, and support. LUCY accepts and welcomes all youth to take part in educational, service-oriented, spiritual, and cultural and social programming including:

  • Educational: College prep, graduate mentor program, tutoring, life skills, leadership and job training
  • Service-oriented:  Civic responsibility classes, local service days, annual immersion trip to the Mexican Border, community panels and more
  • Spiritual/Cultural:Inclusivity and social justice workshops, retreats, support groups, cultural festivals and outings and museums
  • Social:  Developing a healthy mind, body and spirit through sports, fitness, clubs and an eight-week summer camp program, which provides a safe, productive and fun alternative for urban youth. Local trips to the shore, sporting events and amusement parks also provide urban youth with experiences otherwise not available to them

LUCY was selected to receive the Impact Partners grant at our annual event because it is an organization that is near and dear to 2016 honoree Ann Baiada. According to LUCY Board member Cynthia Eisen, “Ann’s steady encouragement and support have allowed LUCY to grow and thrive as it transitions into being a stand-alone 501c3 non-profit organization.”

The Baiada’s philanthropy will permit the expansion of the LUCY College Academy, which provides college and career preparation, support including scholarships, and counseling, to over 350 upcoming and existing LUCY college-bound students.

LUCY Outreach’s Impact Highlights:

  • 100% high school graduation rate since 2008
  • 195 of 204 college enrolled since 2008 with 9 in active military in a city with a 60% high school graduation rate and 5% on to college
  • LUCY serves students from 34 Camden, public, charter, technical and suburban schools
  • LUCY’s mentor program serves over 140 LUCY graduates, ages 18-25, and receive job training and placement, college support, life skills and counseling at monthly events
  • Over 2,000 youth have participated in the program since 1985.  Since then, the program has grown dramatically – serving more than 350 annually
  • 75% of the students are from households where one or both parents are absent
  • Over 175 high school and college students, young professionals, and adults volunteer annually

CFSJ’s Impact Partners grant will be presented as part of Legacy of Giving Award honoring Ann and Mark Baiada on Thursday, October 27th at 6:30 PM at the Moorestown Community House (16 East Main Street, Moorestown, NJ).
