John F. Scarpa To Be Honored With 2018 Legacy of Giving Award

The Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) will honor entrepreneur and investor John F. Scarpa at its Legacy of Giving celebration at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on October 25th. Super Bowl champion and former Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil will serve as the event’s guest speaker.

Since 2013, CFSJ has paid tribute to South Jersey’s generous donors with the Legacy of Giving Award to inspire others to use their resources, passion, knowledge and networks to strengthen our communities. Proceeds from the event benefit CFSJ’s ongoing mission to maximize the impact of generosity throughout the eight county South Jersey region.

Through the John F. Scarpa Foundation, he has supported many causes, including education and health care. He is the principal benefactor for the Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Center at Inspira Health Network in Vineland, and donated $1 million to the renamed John F. Scarpa Technical Education Center of Cumberland County in Vineland. In 2015, he founded the John F. Scarpa Center for Law and Entrepreneurship at Villanova University Law School.

Professionally, Scarpa is the former co-founder and president of American Cellular Network Corporation, as well as former co-founder of Unitel Wireless Communications Systems, and he helped develop and operate cellular telephone systems throughout the U.S. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from the American University of Rome, Italy, as well as Villanova Law School, where he established the John F. CFSJ Fund Impact100 SJ Awards $74k to Hopeworks ‘N Camden

Impact100 South Jersey, a collective women’s giving fund at Community Foundation of South Jersey, awarded its first grant to Hopeworks ‘N Camden at the group’s Annual Meeting on June 26 at Tavistock Country Club.  Hopeworks will receive $74,000 to further its mission of partnering with young men and women as they identify and earn a sustainable future for their communities.

During the Impact100 annual meeting, members heard from Hopeworks and CASA For Children of Mercer and Burlington Counties, which were the finalists from among the 23 organizations that began the grant review process in January. Following presentations from the finalists, the members voted in keeping with their one-member-one-vote model. Hopeworks ‘N Camden emerged as an organization that will receive the inaugural Impact100 South Jersey grant.

The annual meeting was the culmination of a year-long cycle that began with recruiting Impact100 members last fall. That was followed by a thorough, member-driven grant review process throughout the spring. Last fall’s recruitment efforts yielded 74 Charter Members who each contributed $1,000. The combine contributions of $74,000 will fund the Hopeworks grant.

“This has been an incredibly exciting thing to watch. South Jersey women eagerly came together to support the needs of people in our community,” said Leadership Council co-president Nancy Weber of Haddonfield. “When we heard about the Impact100 model, we were certain the time was right for South Jersey. Our goal is to double our membership during our fall 2018 drive so we can award at least $150,000 to organizations dedicated to serving our region.”

Impact100 is a global women’s collective giving initiative that combines the financial resources, expertise and talents of local women who want to be part of transformative philanthropy in their communities. There are dozens of Impact100s throughout the United States and several more in Australia. The model is simple: Every year, each member contributes $1,000 in an effort to raise enough for a $100,000 grant. Volunteer members then vet local organizations that apply for the grant.

Impact100 South Jersey supports nonprofit organizations in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Cumberland Counties. They are currently accepting new members for the 2019 grant year. The deadline for membership is December 15, 2018. Fall information sessions will begin in September.

Andy Fraizer Hired As New CFSJ Executive Director

The Board of Directors of Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) is pleased to announce that Anthony “Andy” Fraizer will become the organization’s new Executive Director effective March 19, 2018.  Fraizer will fill the position previously held by Sidney Hargro who left in July 2017 to become Executive Director for the Philanthropy Network of Greater Philadelphia.

Fraizer, a native of Indiana, comes to CFSJ after serving as Executive Director of Prosperity Indiana for 10 years.  As a community economic development intermediary, Prosperity Indiana supports a network of organizations in developing comprehensive solutions that engage local leadership to generate private and public investment.  Prosperity Indiana members are nonprofit organizations working alongside partners in government and private enterprise to build vital communities and support resilient families.  The organization’s services include consulting, training, grant making, public policy advocacy, and networking to achieve its mission.  Fraizer previously worked as Director of Community Development and Assistant Controller for the City of Indianapolis.

Fraizer received his BA (’98) in Political Science and Social Studies Education from Indiana State University and an MPA in Public Management from Indiana University-Indianapolis (’05).  Fraizer was a Fannie Mae Fellow in the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program and graduate of the Achieving Excellence Executive Education program at the Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government.  Fraizer is also a Byron Fellow, a community of leaders with a vision to create a renaissance in the health of human and natural communities.  He is an active volunteer who has served on several local and national Boards, including the National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations, for which he is currently treasurer.

“After a national search, and considering many national and local candidates, we are certain that Andy’s qualifications and experience combine well to meet the needs of our growing foundation,” said CFSJ Board Chair John C. Connell.  “We’ve come a long way since 2009, when Ford Foundation provided seed money to launch Community Foundation of South Jersey.  We are confident Andy’s strong community focus will greatly expand CFSJ’s ability to create impactful, local change driven by increased philanthropic investment.”
