For the past 18 years, the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers has promoted the use of safe and sober designated drivers throughout Southern New Jersey and the Delaware Valley in partnership with schools and colleges, police departments, bars and restaurants and professional sports teams.
The campaign was established by the family of Navy Ensign John Elliott, who was killed in a collision with a drunk driver two months after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in July 2000. The campaign has won state and national awards for its work to prevent drunk driving, which kills and injures tens of thousands of Americans annually. The HERO Video Network project works with high school media students to produce video messages promoting designated driving and asking students to take the online HERO Pledge not to drink and drive. The videos are shared with other schools and students via the HERO Campaign’s You Tube Channel and the national Fusfoo student video website: www.fusfoo.com. Future funding by the Community Foundation of South Jersey will enable the HERO Campaign to hold a HERO Video Film Festival to showcase and present awards for the best student-produced designated driving videos.
